Beef Cattle Reproduction

Pregnancy Evaluation

Knowing who’s pregnant and who’s open is one of our most important tools in a herd health program. This not only lets you keep feed costs down by culling out dry cattle, it also provides important data on how your herd is performing. Aging the fetus or a calving cut off date is available if the pregnancy is under 150 days old, otherwise we lose dating accuracy. At Nomad Vet Services we use an ultrasound so we can save our Dr’s shoulder and we can find problems or diseases during the pregnancy test. Book now to save on feed!

Semen Testing

Half of the battle is your bulls and ensuring they are able to do their job. Starting with a scrotal measurement, we then collect a sample to evaluate under the microscope. We first see how many swimmers are present then confirm that they are normal in shape and ability to move. There are many factors that influence semen quality including frostbite, degeneration, or diseases that can happen at all ages. We recommend a semen evaluation on each bull before pasture turnout each year, even purebreds purchased this year that just arrived. Even though they passed before the sale doesn’t mean they are still good to go.
